Our century // 2012
von/by Folke Köbberling / Martin Kaltwasser
-------------------------------------------------------
A material sampling of palettes, bulky refuse from the city of Bochum, elements taken from stage sets of the Ruhrtriennale productions Le Vin herbé, Moses und Aron, and Westwärts and from private homes, assembled by 200 volunteers With the community project Our CenturY, the artist duo Folke Köbberling and Martin Kaltwasser transform the area around the Jahrhunderthalle into an urban landscape. The point of departure for this architectural transformation are otherwise unnoticed, disposed of resources such as bulky refuse, elements from stage sets, and palettes, which over the course of the project take on a new life of their own. This temporary entrance to Jahrhunderthalle will be erected with the help of around 200 volunteers.
With their constructions, structures, and sculptures, Folke Köbberling and Martin Kaltwasser work on an aesthetic of resistance against a lifeworld with a unidimensional focus on consumption. With their construction projects and participatory objects, they make multiple forms of urban life visible and politically effective.
Our CenturY tries to re-pole the landscape and the socially definitive Y shape of this fork in the Autobahn into an open structure for a space of possibility and narrative that invites us to spontaneous encounters and unexpected conversations.
